Reupholstery FAQs and Guides

Is my furniture worth recovering?
Many people believe that reupholstering is an inexpensive alternative to buying new furniture. However, that is not necessarily true. Reupholstering is labour-intensive work done by one craftsman, it’s not produced on an assembly line. To weigh up whether or not reupholstering is the best choice for you, ask yourself how much you like your furniture and how old it is.  Age is a good initial indicator of the quality. Furniture that is over 20 years old is generally of good quality and worth recovering. The frames are typically made of kiln-dried hardwood. They are usually screwed and glued with corner blocks, and have web and coil foundation. The structure of the frame is the most important factor when considering re-upholstery. We will
easily and happily carry out minor repairs to an otherwise sturdy frame.

Is antique furniture always worth recovering?
In our view, yes. If you are in doubt about a particular piece, do call and we will gladly give you an honest opinion free of charge.

How can I estimate how much fabric I will need?
We will always estimate exactly how much fabric you need, however please see our handy Guide to Upholstery Fabric Types, Care and Tips.

What techniques and fabrics do you use in your re-upholstery workshop?
As well as making minor frame repairs, we specialise in:

Springing
Each coil spring is stitched onto a jute web base. The springs are then hand tied to each other and ultimately fastened to the frame. All springing covered with 10oz hessian and again tied in by hand. Coir fibre is used as a first stuffing, all scrolls and edges are stitched by hand in time-honoured tradition.

Stuffing
Depending on your needs, we can use coir or a pig bristle mix for the top stuffing. We’ll then add a top layer of white cotton wadding before applying the cover.

Covering
We cut cover fabric by hand and pattern match as required.  We over-lock cushions to avoid fraying edges and then fill them with the interior of your choice - feather, feather and down, fibre fill or foam. Foam technology has moved on in leaps and bounds in recent years and most foam cushions are Dacron wrapped for comfort and durability these days.

Remember to order all your furniture together as we are unable to guarantee an exact match due to slight variations in colour of the dyes, and the fact that a different upholsterer may finish covering the remaining part of the order.

All new foams, fillings and fabrics used in your furniture will conform to the current safety requirements.

Will you reupholster my furniture using fabric I bought elsewhere?
When you buy your fabric from us, 100% satisfaction is guaranteed. That means if there is a problem, we are responsible and we will recover your furniture again at our expense. If you would like us to cover your furniture with a fabric you purchased elsewhere, we will happily do so providing it meets fire and safety requirements of the Furniture and Furnishings Regulations.

Please note, however, in this case if there is a problem with your fabric after your furniture has been covered and you want it recovered again with new replacement fabric you will have to pay for the work again.

Yardage amounts are based on Solid Fabrics
